The Mount Juliet Shawl – a Galentine’s Day Gift

Helen wearing the Mount Juliet Shawl

I’m giving away my Mount Juliet Shawl pattern on Ravelry from now until Galentine’s Day February 13th, 2024.

Just use the code LOVEYOURSELF when you check out on Ravelry to get your copy for free.

The friendships and community that I’ve found among knitters is such a source of joy to me, and I love that Galentine’s Day gives me a chance to celebrate you.

This pattern was originally published in 2019, and I’ve recently given it a little bit of love, with new charts and some fresh photos.

So it seemed like a good excuse to show you a little bit of love, too. You deserve it.

The Mount Juliet Shawl is an apt choice for Galentine’s Day, because it was originally designed for the Knitting Pipeline Retreat in Ireland. The retreat was hosted by my dear friend Paula Emons-Fuessle, who, aside from being a legendary knitter and podcaster, had an incredible gift for bringing people together. She passed away in 2021 after a very brave fight with ovarian cancer, and we miss her a lot.

I have so many treasured memories and close friendships from her retreats over the years! She inspired and supported me and Curious Handmade from the beginning, and I’ll always be very grateful for her friendship.

When I design a pattern for a retreat, I always keep the idea of “social knitting” in mind. I love a project that’s easy to memorise, with a gentle, steady rhythm. That way, it’s a lot easier to knit and talk at the same time!

The Mount Juliet pattern features a simple and fun-to-knit lace stitch inspired by the Georgian architecture of the Mount Juliet Manor House in Kilkenny, Ireland, where the retreat was held. The shawl is a generous asymmetrical triangle shape and uses 2 skeins of fingering-weight yarn. It looks beautiful in both high and low contrast pairings, as you can see from these gorgeous projects:
