Description
The warmth of the day has vanished with the sun, and now the cool air ruffles damp heads. Every moment of this visit to the beach has been savoured, and there’s no hurry to get home. Everyone is settling in to wring the last drops of joy from the evening. Wriggling out of swimsuits under sandy towels, wrapping up in cosier things from the bottom of the totebags, and digging out a pit on the beach for a bonfire. Higher up on the shore, the flotsam and jetsam discarded by the sea makes exceptional fuel, and there’s a race to see who can carry or drag the most driftwood back.
After a few false starts, the blaze catches, and it’s time to hunker down and luxuriate in the glow. The flames flicker, every now and then throwing out unexpected shades of blue and lavender, a fizzle or a pop. All the fun, happiness, adventure and beauty of this perfect day replay themselves over and over as the bonfire burns low. This quiet time is when the memories we’ve made set themselves in ink, so that we can carry them away with us when we finally leave.
Our final shawl of Season 4 is a generous, cosy wrap, as warm as a hug. Knit from DK weight yarn and featuring handsome but straightforward cables, the Gathering Driftwood Wrap combines traditional comfort with contemporary style. It is the perfect companion for fending off the chill, whether you’re wrapping it around you on a late summer’s night at the seaside or on a random Tuesday afternoon in deep midwinter, when the beach is a distant but indelible memory.

As usual, we recommend you knit a tension square to check your gauge before embarking on a project.”
