There is a lot to love about the graceful hazel tree. Tree is quite a grand name for a plant that is actually small enough to tuck into even a little bit of earth in a back corner. The slender silvery-brown trunks, fluttering leaves and bright yellow dangling catkins which appear in spring are all part of its charm. And of course, the heavy crop of delicious hazelnuts it offers each autumn are prized by humans and squirrels alike. But the mythology behind the hazel is another reason it deserves a place in our garden. It’s been revered as sacred and magical since ancient times and called the tree of wisdom, inner peace, and inspiration. I think most of us could do with double helpings of all of those things.

The Hazelnut socks, have an autumnal inspiration. A panel of deceptively simple twisted stitches creates texture and interest in the front: the leaves and nuts of the hazel tree. The rest of the design features restful stockinette stitch for a relaxing “knit anywhere” project. These socks are finished with a heel flap and gusset, along with a wedge toe, but can be easily adapted to your favourite methods for heel and toe.
